The Exiles
Kent Mackenzie, 1961, 72 mins
UPDATE: The Israeli army killed three Palestinians during an overnight raid on the Balata refugee camp in Nablus on May 21. As such, we will not be going ahead with this event.
Screening with a new translation into Arabic (subs), The Exiles chronicles a night in the life of a group of Indigenous 20-somethings living in the Bunker Hill district of Los Angeles.
Kent MacKenzie renders an indelible portrait of urban alienation as the film opens with a typical nightly bar-crawl and ends in a night of drumming and dancing on a hilltop overlooking the downtown skyline. Displacement and cultural survival are given eloquent voice in this unique screen story.
