Jack Shenker is a journalist based in London and Cairo, who writes about politics, protest, and anything else that springs to mind. His stories have won several international awards, and been translated into many languages.

Formerly Egypt correspondent for the Guardian newspaper, his coverage of the Egyptian revolution and counter-revolution was recognised with the Amnesty International Gaby Rado award for excellence in human rights journalism. His work has also covered Gaza, Africa, Central Asia, the US and the UK, and been published in a wide range of newspapers and magazines around the world including Granta, the London Review of Books and the New York Times, as well as being adapted into films by the BBC. In 2012 his investigation into the deaths of African migrants in the Mediterranean – whose cries for help were apparently ignored by European military units – was awarded news story of the year at the One World media awards. In 2018 he was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for political journalism.

Jack’s first book, ‘The Egyptians: A Radical Story’, was published by Allen Lane and Penguin in 2016. It tells the story of Egypt’s recent tumult from below, and argues that the country’s struggles are enmeshed with global patterns of oppression and resistance which stretch far beyond Egypt’s borders. ‘The Egyptians’ was critically acclaimed by a diverse array of reviewers – from Noam Chomsky to the Economist – and was shortlisted for the Bread and Roses award. He is currently working on a new book, ‘Now We Have Your Attention: Inside The New Politics’, which explores the ongoing collapse of one political orthodoxy in Britain and the contested alternatives rising from the rubble. It will be published by The Bodley Head / Vintage in 2019.
